We rescued Kate from a horse slaughter pipeline in Texas. This is her story: Kate is a 4 year old Quarter Horse mare who grew up on a South Dakota Indian reservation. After a horrible draught Kate and many other yearlings of the Indian reservation were sold in a livestock auction. She was only one year old at the time when a "kill buyer" was the highest bidder. So called "kill buyers" are people who supply horses to horse slaughter pipelines to Mexico or Canada. Because horse slaughter is illegal in the USA many horses sold in auctions end up in "kill pens" where "kill buyers" keep the horses until they ship to Mexico or Canada to be slaughtered. These "kill pens" usually have horrible conditions. Horses from all over and all kinds of different backgrounds are thrown together into an overcrowded pen where they have to fight over food and water. In those grim conditions many horses bite and kick each other to survive.
Kate was lucky and was saved from this kill pen by a lady. At the kill pen her left eye was badly injured (most likely by an electric prod) which resulted in a blind spot on her eye and made her permanently head shy. She can only be approached slowly and patiently. Once she trusts you, she will allow you to pet her head. The lady who previously owned her was no longer able to keep her and Kate ended up back in a "kill pen" in Texas where we rescued her from in September 2022. She's currently in rehabilitation and is doing really well :)
Kate is a very sweet horse.

Kate was protecting him from other horses in the kill pen. When he arrived at our barn, he was very sick. A lot of heavy drainage from his nostrils, dangerously high fever and severe coughing. He also had a badly infected injury under his neck. Given his age his immune system is not built up yet. Usually, vaccinations prevent horses from such viruses, but we don't know his medical history. Being in such stressful conditions at the kill pen the chance of infection and outbreaks are very high and many horses are severely ill. After 4 weeks of TLC and good nutrition, he is free of symptoms and doing well :)
Being only one year old he's the sweetest in your pocket kind of guy.
We rescued Sunshine with her mother when she was only one month old in 2021. We raised her with lots of love on our farm and she has a wonderful personality and loves kids :) She is currently in training to become a Therapy Horse to visit Children's Hospitals and Nursery homes in the area. Because of her beautiful look we offer photo shoots with her. We have different themes to choose from, e.g. "Fairytale Unicorn" or Santa/Reindeer for Holiday pictures. She's quiet the little model and all of the proceeds of her "modeling career" are going to help us rescue more horses in need :)

After our vet examined him, the diagnosis was severe pneumonia. After a week of monitoring and medication he did not improve, and we had to take him to an emergency clinic in Ocala, where they specialize in such medical cases. He's currently getting intensive care at the clinic, and we are happy to report that he is feeling a little better :)
Stay posted for updates on his progress!

Her mother, Luna, came to us in pretty poor condition. She suffered from severe malnutrition and needed medical treatment for a chronic illness. Within just a few months of good nutrition and TLC she was looking really nice.
Baby Lavender was growing up to be a very sweet horse but unfortunately got recently injured and needed surgery. She is currently in an intensive rehabilitation program in Ocala, and we are hoping for a full recovery. We miss her greeting us every morning.
Spirit was born at our farm in May 2022. We rescued her mother, Wildfire, while she was pregnant. Baby Spirit is a feisty little miniature horse who thinks she is a racehorse :)
She loves to run and get into mischief. She and her mommy can be visited at our farm.
In October 2021 we adopted a donkey family from another horse rescue in the area. Mama, Papa and Maggie are very loving and curious :)
Mama Sky and her tiny baby Sunshine came to us in June 2021. Sky was in very poor condition and literally skin and bones. Within a few months of good food and TLC she was back in good condition.
Wildfire and Shadow were rescued together in March 2022 from a lady who couldn't take care of them anymore. Wildfire was pregnant when she arrived and a couple of months later gave birth to a healthy little foal which we named Spirit. She was our first foal born on our farm :)
Shadow and Wildfire are both very sweet miniature horses and make a great addition to our little herd.
Karma aka 'Acts of Karma' is a 12-year-old Thoroughbred mare. She was also rescued from a Texas kill pen in October 2022. She is a registered Thoroughbred and was used as a brood mare. Somehow, she was sold in an auction to a kill buyer.
She is a very sweet horse and loves attention. She's currently in training to become a riding horse.
Check out our Fcaebook page for updates on her progress.
Fancy Sockett is an 18-month-old, registered Paint horse and was one of the lucky horses that we rescued in October 2022 from a Texas kill pen. He was a colt who was barely handled when he arrived. We had him gelded shortly after he went through all the vet checks and vaccinations.
He is a very energetic and fast horse and is currently in training to learn basic ground manners such as how to lead on a rope, groom and how to act around people. He has a ton of potential and might make a great performance horse someday.

Shiny Cougar is a 2-year-old registered Quarter Horse mare that we rescued in October 2022 from the same Texas kill pen. She has never been touched by humans before she came to us. She has never worn a halter in her life before we started working with her. Every day interaction by talking to her and spending time in her stall, little by little she started reaching out and touching our hand. After working with her 3 months now, she finally allows us to gently put a halter on her and groom her a little. It takes a lot of patience to earn her trust and she has a long ways to go.
Check out our Facebook page for updates on her training.
Luna was our first miniature horse that we rescued with her baby Lavender in May 2021. She arrived in very bad shape. She had several open sores on her face and was literally skin and bones. She also suffered from a chronic illness that needed to be treated right away. Unfortunately, we don't know much about her background. She is very shy but also very sweet. The vet estimates her age to be around 6 years old when she arrived.
Bon Jovi was rescued by another local horse rescue group and recently joined our little miniature herd to have company. He is such a sweet boy and loves kids. He is ridable on the lead line and loves his new job as an advocate for our horse rescue organization.
Lavender and Sunshine as babies in Summer 2021.
